mindful MATERIALS Welcomes New Leadership and Board Appointments

mindfulmaterials.com — mindful MATERIALS, the nonprofit dedicated to reducing, and ultimately reversing, the embodied impacts of the built environment, is pleased to announce significant changes to its Board of Directors.

 
 

Lona Rerick, Principal and Sustainable Materials Leader at ZGF Architects, steps into the role of Board Chair. With her extensive experience in sustainable architecture and dedication to advancing material sustainability and environmental stewardship, Rerick brings invaluable insights and leadership to the organization. ZGF Architects is also a catalyst member of mindful MATERIALS’ AEC Forum Group.

"I am honored to serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors for mindful MATERIALS," says Rerick. "I look forward to collaborating with our board members, team members, and the mindful MATERIALS community at large to further our mission of promoting holistically responsible materials in the built environment. It is this important work that will help our community live up to the promise of the AIA Materials Pledge."

Steve Kooy, Technical Director of Health and Sustainability at BIFMA, steps down from his role as inaugural Board Chair and into the inaugural Past Chair position.  mindful MATERIALS’ CEO Annie Bevan shared her deep appreciation for his exemplary leadership and contributions to the non-profit’s growth during his tenure.

"Steve's guidance and commitment to mM has been instrumental in driving us forward and accelerating us as an organization. Words can’t describe our sincerest gratitude for his dedicated service," says Bevan.

Tim Conway, Vice President of Global Accounts and Sustainability at Shaw Industries, concludes his term as a board member. Conway's commitment to sustainability and his strategic vision have significantly impacted the mindful MATERIALS’ initiatives and accomplishments since it was founded by HKS in 2014.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to Tim for his invaluable contributions to mindful MATERIALS,” says Bevan. “From the very start of mM as an initiative that made transparency and optimization information easily accessible to designers as they select products back in 2014 to the present day, ten years later, Tim has been with us every step of the way. We look forward to his continued involvement in representing Shaw, a catalyst member, in our Manufacturer Forum. Tim as an absolute force in the industry”

"It’s been an exhilarating journey that we've embarked upon together,” says Conway. “From forging new pathways in sustainable design to reshaping the very fabric of conscious material choices, it's been an electrifying ride. I eagerly anticipate the unfolding chapters of mindful MATERIALS’ story.”

Furthermore, mM proudly welcomes Jane Abernethy, Chief Sustainability Officer at Humanscale, to the Board. Abernethy's passion for sustainability and her expertise in creating environmentally responsible products will further enhance the organization's mission.

"I am thrilled to join the Board of Directors at mindful MATERIALS and contribute to advancing sustainable practices across the industry," says Abernethy. Humanscale is also a catalyst member of mM’s Manufacturer Forum Group. 

The incoming board members and leadership changes mark an exciting new chapter for mindful MATERIALS as it continues to drive positive change and innovation in sustainable design and construction. As the organization wraps up the first year of its three-year strategic plan, look for an Impact Report and details on Year Two to be made available later this spring.
