A key step toward expanding access to the CMF and accelerating sustainable product decisions across workflows.
mindful MATERIALS (mM), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to aligning the building industry around a common language for sustainable products, today announced that the mindful MATERIALS Portal will officially sunset on August 4, 2025.
This strategic shift reflects mM’s evolving role—from technology host to industry aligner —and reinforces the expansion of the Common Materials Framework (CMF) as a ubiquitous, integrated resource for sustainable materials decisions.
Originally launched in 2023, the mindful MATERIALS Portal served as a valuable proof of concept—demonstrating how the Common Materials Framework (CMF) could be digitized to support more informed, impact-driven product decisions by enabling searches based on impact categories. But the Portal was never meant to be the final destination. As the needs of the industry have evolved, so has the CMF.
Today, the CMF is no longer confined to one tool—it is available across a growing network of platforms, including Acelab, BuildingEase, Ecomedes, Material Bank, Materially Better, and Sustainable Minds. These integrations increase access, reduce redundancy, and empower stakeholders to make better product decisions within the tools and workflows they already use.
“This evolution is about meeting the industry where it works,” says Annie Bevan, CEO of mindful MATERIALS. “By embedding the CMF directly into trusted platforms, we’re simplifying access, strengthening alignment, and accelerating our collective ability to make more informed, sustainable decisions — without adding extra steps to anyone’s workflow.”
Ecomedes will offer enhanced CMF-aligned search and sharing functionality at products.ecomedes.com and will migrate all users, products, and user-created projects from the mindful MATERIALS Portal to their core catalog. Ecomedes will continue to support both Portal users and manufacturers throughout this transition.
“The Portal was an important step forward,” says Laurel Chadzynski, Vice President of Engagement at mindful MATERIALS. “But we knew the future required broader access and deeper integration. Sunsetting the Portal allows us to focus our energy on amplifying the CMF’s reach and impact across the industry.”
This transition also reflects mindful MATERIALS’ deepened commitment to its core mission: serving as a convener, standard-setter, and ecosystem aligner, rather than a technology provider. The organization remains focused on expanding access to the CMF by partnering with leading platforms that share a commitment to transparency, interoperability, and scalable impact.
“The CMF is no longer something you find in one place—it’s becoming part of the infrastructure of how the industry works,” added Bevan. “This is how we move from good intentions to real, scalable progress.”
