The detailed analysis tells a nuanced story of sustainable building materials specification on architecture projects. Practitioner knowledge is growing in all five material impact categories: Human Health, Climate Health, Ecosystem Health, Social Health & Equity, and Circularity. This report exists thanks to the work and dedication of the reporting signatories, and points to how we as a profession can continue to improve building materials selection in tangible ways.

Can construction hit its climate goals through circularity?

The built environment accounts for roughly 40% of global CO2 emissions, and circularity is usually the piece left out when people talk about fixing that. Dennis Wilson, VP of ESG and Managing Director of Saint-Gobain Circular Economy Solutions for North America, has spent his career inside that gap, and his answer to whether circular practices alone can get construction to its climate targets isn’t a simple yes. As VP of ESG at the world’s largest building products company, Wilson has real programs to point to, not just commitments on paper, and that’s where this piece starts.
